About the Event
The Schoharie River Center, an environmental and cultural center located at 2025 Burtonville Road, Esperance, announces it upcoming “Fishing Heritage Day,” a community open house devoted to fishing - including the art and craft of fishing and fishing lore. The outdoor event will take place on Saturday, June 12, 2021, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. Demonstrations include woven basket creels, carved and painted fishing lures, bamboo fly rod construction and repair, fish taxidermy, and tied fishing flies. Participating artists will be on hand to demonstrate their arts and to answer questions. The day also features hands-on macroinvertebrate identification, led by the youth of the Schoharie River Center’s Environmental Study Team, and raffles of wildlife art and fishing gear provided by Orvis. Admission is by donation. Families are welcome. All COVID-19 restrictions will be followed, including the wearing of masks and social distancing protocols.
Founded in 1999, the Schoharie River Center’s mission is to instill a love for learning, arts and science, promote the values of stewardship for our local environment, and encourage the positive and responsible involvement of youth in their communities. The program is supported by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, Governor Andrew Cuomo, and the New York State Legislature.
