Description:
Dyeing Wool Yarn with Natural Plants. Sunday, August 14, 10-4
Ever wonder how yarn was dyed before the advent of commercial dyes? What plants were used and how was dye made? The resources are all around us. Join us for this fun workshop as we take you through all the steps to get fantastic results from locally sourced natural dyes. We gather weeds and flowers, mordant several mini skeins of wool yarn, and prepare dye materials baths to dip our skeins into. We'll explore several techniques including sun dyeing, kettle dyeing, creating tonal colors and using iron water. At the end of the day, you will have all the information you need to confidently -repare and dye yarns at home from plants and weeds that you gather on your own!
All materials needed are included in the workshop price including 6 mini skeins of yarn for dyeing. Additional larger skeins and dye materials will be available for purchase. Bring your own lunch. Please wear long sleeves and long pants and wear shoes comfortable for hiking as we will be gathering dye materials. Bring your own bug spray or insecticide and sun screen.
Instructor is Cecilia Tkaczyk, local sheep farmer, experimental dyer and yarn shop owner who has mastered the techniques needed to successfully dye her own yarn from plants and weeds found on her farm in Duanesburg.
