Arts and Cultural Programming
The Schoharie River Center, in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts and New York Humanities, is proud to present a variety of public programs focused on arts and culture. We hold one and two day workshops, music events and performances. Our focus is on the arts and cultural heritage that reflects the aesthetics and history of the region that is the Mohawk/Schoharie Watershed, especially those cultural expressions that reflect the region's sense of place and traditions.

Bonnie Gale - Building A Living Willow Structure
The Schoharie River Center was very excited to host Artist In Residence, Bonnie Gale July 5-8.
While she was here, she constructed a living willow structure on our hiking trail along the river. Below are pictures of what it looks like today. Willow grows very quickly and in a few weeks, it will grow out and look very different. Come by the River Center and see this beautiful natural sculpture, and then come back and see how it has changed.
Bonnie Gale has been a professional traditional willow basket maker and willow artist for the past 34 years who teaches, writes and exhibits nationally. She has degrees in planning and landscape architecture (1973 B.A. Hons from the University of Manchester, England; 1975 M.C.P. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Massachusetts; and 2011 M.S.L.A. from SUNY-ESF, Syracuse, New York). Her baskets are part of the collections at Plimoth Plantation and Mount Vernon Estate. In 1999, she was awarded an Artist's Fellowship from New York Foundation for the Arts.
Bonnie Gale’s living willow installations have been featured in Vogue, Vogue Living, House and Garden and Fiber Arts magazines. In 2009, her work was featured in the PBS "Cultivating Life" series and in 2010, she appeared on the Martha Stewart Show. She was featured in the new public television series Artist Café which aired locally in October 2013. Gale produced her first book: Living Willow Form in 2014.
