Battenkill
Camping Trip
In
August, a group of EST members spent four days and three
nights on the Battenkill
River canoing, hiking and camping while learning
about the Battenkill watershed. It was a chance to experience
a different riparian zone than what they are used to
seeing in the Schoharie River, as well as apply their
water testing skills to the waters of the Battenkill.
The group was guided by Kelly Nolan (Watershed
Assessment Associates) who shared his extensive
knowledge of the area and of the ecological relationship
between the land, soil, water and macro invertebrates.
He also taught canoeing skills and safety. A great
time was had by all! See
the slideshow.
Summer
2008 Archeology Field School
The
annual Archeology Field School at Burtonsville was held
August 25th - 29th. Hartgen
Archeological Associates conducted the week
long archeology dig while about 20 area middle school
and high school students assisted with the dig. Students
learned how to measure a unit, perform a shovel test,
properly uncover and collect artifacts and record their
findings. Many interesting artifacts were uncovered.
But it wasn't all work and no play! Students also cooled
off in the nearby Schoharie Creek.
