Thank
you to all the volunteers!
August
28th, Hurricane
Irene caused record flooding of the Schoharie Creek and devastated
towns and villages all along the creek, including Prattsville,
Schoharie, Middleburgh, Esperance, about 20 homes on Priddle
Rd, Burtonsville and Lost Valley, as well as Pattersonville,
Rotterdam Junction, Scotia and Schenectady along the Mohawk
River.
As you
may know, the Schoharie River Center owns 20 acres of land
right along the Schoharie Creek in Burtonsville - we've owned
this land since December of 2010. Our buildings sustained
no damage due to the storm. Yet, the storm left our Nature
Preserve and its trails a terrible mess. Houses that were
ripped off their foundations in Burtonsville, and further
upstream, smashed into trees, taking them down and leaving
massive piles of debris, some as high as 12 feet tall.
With the
help of many volunteers , lending their time and equipment
and the work of FEMA contractors, virtually all of the non-organic
and construction debris has been removed. We are calling an
end to our regular cleanup efforts at this time. In the spring,
we will begin various projects to help the nature preserve
by planting trees, spreading wood chips, rebuilding the lean-to
and breaking down the remaining piles of trees.
An extra
special thank you goes to Katherine Dollinger and Kay Bonney
for coordinating a volunteer effort from General Electric.
The folks at GE really came through for us. THANK YOU!
The students
of the Geology Department at Union College also contributed
a lot of their time - THANK YOU!
We wish
to express our deepest gratitude to all the people
who have helped us since Hurricane Irene came through. We
tried to get every volunteer's name, but have probably missed
some. Here is a list of those that we were able to collect
(we apologize if we didn't include your name):
